Science
Excellence in Science
Science is a vital subject, and at Hamsey Green, we want to help enable our children to become scientists of the future.
In science, we know that the world around us is inspirational. Through the National Curriculum, following the White Rose Science Scheme, we teach children key knowledge and information about our amazing universe, and children then apply these in real-life investigations. The scheme has a clear indicated a progression in the key scientific knowledge and concepts from Year 1 to Year 6.
Budding Scientists
Our intent is to develop inquisitive, budding scientists who can use their scientific knowledge to make informed predictions and test their own hypotheses. Our philosophy of authentic learning in science encourages children to:
- see science in the world around them
- understand it through gaining scientific knowledge
- apply what they have learnt to experiments whilst developing investigative skills
What does Science look like at Hamsey Green?
- Children learn both the knowledge and skills to become scientists of the future.
- Children have opportunities for scientific enquiry and investigation.
- Children learn key scientific vocabulary and can use this to talk about their learning.
- Teachers pre-empt and address misconceptions
- Children learn about a diverse range of scientists from the past and present and link their learning to potential career paths.
- High-quality texts are used to enrich science teaching.
- We make excellent use of Hamsey’s outdoor learning environments.
Our Outdoor Spaces
We are incredibly fortunate to have wonderful outdoor learning spaces at Hamsey. Our Outdoor Learning school lies at the heart of this and our pupils use this space to learn about living things, habitats, and ecosystems.
The children look forward to our annual National Science Week Celebration in March.
