Ambition and Enrichment

At Hamsey Green Primary and Acorns Nursery, children are encouraged to be the best that they can be by aiming high and having aspirational goals. They embrace the school ethos, "Together we learn for life" and our values of ‘ACORNS’. They are willing to challenge themselves as learners.

Establishing positive role models across the school is important to us and enables children's experiences to broaden. Children at Hamsey Green Primary School and Acorns Nursery understand the importance of having a positive attitude, praising effort, and that there is always scope for improvement. Rich and varied learning experiences are designed with great thought and care, ensuring that they are ambitious and challenging for all children.  Our aim is to broaden our children’s horizons, expand their knowledge and nurture their interests. This captures the inclusive nature and high aspirations of our school.

Below are some of the ways your child could enhance their school experience.  Click on the headings below to access more information in each section.

Across the Whole School

  • As a Stepping Into Business school, we run an enterprise week at least twice a year– this encourages aspiring business, finance, design, and marketing careers.
  • British Values Assemblies –Our weekly assemblies promote goal-setting and aspirations for all, regardless of age, e.g., through charity fundraising, and learning about aspirational sports achievements such as Luke Littler. This links to our ASPIRATIONAL school value.
  • Leadership and responsibility roles- we have an active school council, Eco-Councillors, Librarians, Physifun young PE Leaders, Milk/Fruit monitors/class monitors, and Prefects, Head and Deputy Head Pupils.
  • Geography – through learning about people and their cultures.
  • Through encouraging curiosity through enquiry questions on curriculum subjects.
  • By developing and building on skills learnt from Nursery to Year 6, we get them Secondary-ready.
  • Through further developing PE skills.  Pupils may attend workshops, for example, at Caterham School in Netball/Hockey, New Age Curling at Warlingham Secondary School, and workshops at Crystal Palace Stadium/Training ground.
  • We attend Aim High writing and Maths Challenge workshops.
  • Ensuring we have ambitious expectations of behaviour.
  • Through enrichment experiences across the whole school, as well as trips/visits being planned for at least once a year for all years,
  • We offer over 20 clubs termly (both teacher-led and external clubs).
  • Through our PSHE curriculum, we promote our school values, kindness, as well as support pupils to develop stronger emotional resilience and strong mental health.
  • By having a high expectation for attendance, targets are always set above the National Average!
  • An expectation that all children are engaged in all lessons
  • Through the ambition of our Cultural Capital, British Values ethos, and ensuring our children are aware of the Protected Characteristics.
  • Through Science Week – encouraging Science/STEM careers!
  • Through 3EducationTechnology termly workshops promoting computing and online safety
  • Ambition for staff – continuous CPD: "Together we learn for life"

Acorns Nursery and Reception (EYFS)

  • We nurture independence, curiosity, and ambition from the moment children join us. Our carefully planned learning experiences are designed to support each child’s individual needs and stage of development, ensuring they get the best possible start to their education.
  • Through continuous provision and imaginative role-play, we provide opportunities for children to explore the world around them, learn about real-life roles, important historical figures, and people who make a difference in our community. They might become doctors in our role-play, or engineers designing bridges, or pilots zooming across countries. We also introduce inspiring figures to encourage big dreams and ambitious thinking.
  • We believe that every child has the potential to achieve great things. By fostering resilience (linked to our school values), confidence, and a love for learning, we inspire our youngest learners to aim high, embrace challenges, and develop the skills they need to succeed. Our Early Years environment encourages curiosity, problem-solving, and creative thinking, laying the foundations for a bright and ambitious future.

Key Stage 1

  • Continuing our high expectations, we encourage the children to challenge themselves and aspire to be the best they can be.
  • We introduce pupils to inspiring success stories and role models from around the local community and the world, by learning about significant figures, such as Sir David Attenborough in Geography,  the Wright Brothers, Christopher Columbus, Florence Nightingale, Mary Seacole, and Queen Victoria in History.
  • We make links to our local heroes who are making a difference today.  For example, by welcoming doctors, paramedics, and police into school to talk about their jobs, children begin to see the endless possibilities for their own futures. By aspiring to what they know exists, these vital opportunities broaden their horizons, we help them connect names and places to real-life goals and challenges, again linking to our school value of 'Aspiration'.
  • We are inspired by Warlingham PE Ambassadors, who teach Year 1 groups throughout the year.

Key Stage 2

  • We introduce a wide range of examples of accomplishment—both past and present—that have had local and international significance, such as Year 3s learning about our local artist CS Lockton, and Year4s learning about Marcus Rashford.
  • Through subjects like History, Science, and Geography, our children learn about role models such as XX  , and local figures who have made a difference in our community, such as xxx. These inspiring examples motivate children to take an independent approach to their learning, helping them set high expectations for themselves.
  • Giving the opportunity to organise exhibitions of their learning, where they present their homework projects on topics such as the Solar System, ancient civilisations, or the impact of local environmental efforts. These exhibitions allow them to showcase their achievements to their peers and the wider school community, fostering a sense of pride in their work.
  • Receiving regular targets from their teachers, such as improving their writing skills, refining their mathematical reasoning, or deepening their understanding of science concepts, adds to their aspiration to be the best they can be. They could act on these targets by engaging in tasks that challenge them, like writing persuasive letters, solving multistep maths problems, or conducting experiments.
  • Encouraging them to take greater responsibility for their own learning, children begin to understand their strengths and areas for improvement. For example, a child who has shown determination in their art skills might work on developing their technique in drawing or painting, while another might focus on building their confidence in public speaking. They are increasingly aware of their potential and are determined to reach it.
  • With the next stage of their educational journey approaching, they participate in a variety of transition activities with our local secondary school, such as visiting the school’s science labs or meeting secondary school students to discuss their learning experiences. These activities inspire children to continue being ambitious and courageous in their learning, looking forward to the opportunities that lie ahead.
  • We continue supporting them to understand the importance of respecting and valuing others, as well as their environment, linking to our Nurture Value. For example, they might participate in eco-friendly initiatives such as recycling projects or charity events, learning the importance of good behaviour, politeness – our children hold doors for one another, and Proud Walk around the building, and teamwork – linked to our Collaboration Value and working together in achieving shared goals. This is evidenced through Enterprise Week, too.
  • By broadening their horizons and encouraging them to push beyond their limits, we help our children to embrace challenges and develop a mindset of ambition, perseverance, and confidence, ready for the exciting opportunities ahead.

We do this through activities such as:

  • Year 3 Feet First Walking Programme
  • Year 3 Conservation project
  • Year 3 & 4 CPFC Football workshops
  • Year 4 SES Water workshop
  • Year 5- ambition in the workplace, a talk from a publisher
